Inaugural Wordapalooza June 22-23, 2002.
EDIT on AUG 23,2001: Dear friends, if you learn anything useful as we go along, hotels, transportation, car-pooling etc., et.al., that ilk, please post it here!
We now return you to the original thread... Thank you

This is where original Part 2 started:
Now, let's get serious about this first Wordapalooza.
Surely we must consider a fee payable per person for the use of Sparteye's home.
Consider : her water bill will triple as will her electric and those are just two large things -- even the small stuff like toilet paper and hand soap add up. Never mind all the chemicals and care for the pool!
$10 per adult and $5 per child? If Pearl has to come with me I'll be glad to pay a child's fee for Her Princessness. So, what's the reaction ... whadda ya think?

For the original idea from, and the invitation extended by Sparteye search for "Wordapalooza" in Information and Announcements category.

If you bring Pearl, you'll have paid for your rent. Jeff will just l-u-u-u-r-v-e having another dog around. Provided of course, he's not too short-sighted to see her, so to speak! [lonely canines hearts club-e]

Thanks, wow, for your concern. But before we start passing the plate, let's see what we are really going to need, and how it will be provided. Since this is a cooperative effort, a lot of things will be provided by different members of the group. And since I'll have no travel costs, I am certainly in a position to contribute a bit more to supplies than otherwise. Let's let the financial committee figure out what will need to be purchased and then we can collect for that general fund.

Sorry to go tromping on toes right and left ... apologies to all ... I just reverted to my editor's mentality and, sensing a great story, I went into organizational mode.
So I'll go away now and promise to try n' behave myself in future.

Have spent the day tracking down accommodations in the East Lansing area...if you plan to stay in a hotel or motel instead of at Sprteye's house, please be aware of the following :
From local Yellow Pages : Sparteye sent me:
The Colonial Motel; 1505 South Main Eaton Rapids MI, phone 1-517-663-9813 Take all major cards. Some kitchenettes, AC etc. They do NOT take reservations more than a month in advance. I spoke directly by phone to Colonial Inn deskman and he actually laughed when I asked for June 2002 reservations!
Given what comes next I would call in April 2002 and insist!

Another suggestion from Sparteye is the very elegant English Inn see http://www.EnglishInn.com The phone is
1-517-663-2500 and you can contact them online ... HOWEVER rooms available ONLY June 21 and 22 The Inn is completely booked by one party on June Sun. 23rd and Mon. 24th.
The Marriot Residence Inn in East Lansing completely booked. This hotel takes dogs so AAA tried there and even called direct -- no joy.
Apparently there is some big thing happening in area that weekend.
Suggest you contact your area AAA for info and bookings.
By the way you do NOT have to be a AAA member to book air travelthrough them, and if you book air tickets thru them they are good about helping with hotels. I know, as I managed an AAA office in long ago.
More as it comes in.

I was a bit confused when I read Sparteye's invitation for all of us to just come over to her house...there are 2618 of us (last I checked), and it looks like a good portion of that number are interested in this event!

Huh?

I think what musick is attempting to say is that Sparteye will only give out her address and directions to those who specifically ask to come. Otherwise there would be people sleeping in the bathtub.

Does Sparteye or Helen or anyone involved in organizing have a list of Ayes and Maybes? If so, I'd love to see it. Don't see any reason why it can't be posted here (like the Birth Anniversaries) unless someone has a security objection that hasn't occurred to me.

well, there is one (albeit paranoid) consideration with posting notices that you'll be away from the board (for instance) -- it announces to the world that you prolly won't be home.

you prolly won't be home.

But if only our Board names are posted, how can anyone, including most of us, connect a name with a street address with the intent of doing mischief? Or am I missing something?

It would depend on how much info (such as location, etc.) you have in your Profile or in posts. I suppose a determined hacker could read your PM's or profile info on your AWAD acct or on the email acct you put in your AWAD profile. I don't know how difficult that is.

Anyway, those of us who don't live alone won't be leaving the house unguarded (unless the whole family comes along). Also, you could have a neighbor "housewatch" for you.

We are actually quite free on this board-- and more than one poster has over the course of time, given a real last name, a mothers maiden name, a place of work, and a town-- it wouldn't take much to get his/her home address-- and you have almost enough information to do something dangerous!

but on the other hand, we have one member of this board pay visits to about 10 others.. so about 10 members of the board, for sure, are not axe murderers, lying in wait for their next victim. the jury is still out on me, Cap't K was afraid to meet up with me... smart man! but i sit by my grindstone waiting the day....

part of our freedom lies in our nature-- i think word lovers can't help but to be at least slightly liberal-- even Jazz-- our conservative republican -- i think he would be fight for what, in the US is shorthanded as, freedom of the press-- the right to free expression. (which includes words, and images) we champion it, and we practice it, and we all seem to revel in it!

It is wonderful that Sparteye has gone out on a limb-- and opened her house to us. I suppose there is a small possiblity of some "unsavory" character showing up.. but i think enough of us savor the comradery of AWAD, and look forward to meeting each other.. any unsavory character is not going to be let to get away with anything.

it would be nice to think, that smart people like us are always good people.. (well, i am smart, and damn, i am good too!) but i can understand paranoia--

Jazz-- our conservative republican

Without digressing into politics, I am not a Republican! (in the political party sense of the word) I'm a libertarian. You've just heard my ecomonic opinions more than my social ones. But we're not going to get into that.

Well, I for one am planning on it, and I'm not afraid who knows it. Burgle away - if you schedule your mischief that far in advance! The roomie will be home holding down the fort and griming up the bathtub while I'm gone, of that much I can be sure...

As you may have all guessed already, I don't give a pair of foetid dingo's kidneys about the possibility of burglary when I'm away. If I want to go somewhere, I go. Or if SWMBO wants me to go somewhere I go, but perhaps I just repeat myself.

Of course, I have, just recently, resolved any potential problems by not having a home to go back to, but I assure you that's just a one-off until I do it again.

Just on general princples I don't think putting a list of attendees on the Net ahead of time is a good idea.
A list after the fact would be interesting.
My attitude about pre-publication is : why take the chance?

I have no worry as there are three police officers I know well who live in our close-knit neighborhood, and the Chief of Police is an old and dear friend. Plus the tenant I have is not to be trifled with and the neighbors on either side and across the street watch the house anytime I am gone!
So unless Capital Kiwi is the head of an international burglary ring .... Hmmmmmmmmmm !!! ???

Head of an international burglary ring? Don't I wish. Or rather, I wish I was the head of a successful international drug smuggling cartel, because there's probably more money in it.

Of course, every burglar who lives on the planet and has access to the Internet is scanning our site on a regular basis, just looking for an opportunity to catch us napping - at Ann's place. And given the inherent stupidity of most crims, Ann's place in Michigan is the one they'd attempt to burgle ...

Any burglar who breaks into my house next June and is confronted by this sorry lot, all tumbled together in a massive bad hair day in the early hours after a couple of nights of linguistical mania deserves what he gets.

Welcomed and offered a coffee is what he'd probably get. After all, few of us know what more than a couple of the others look like. If s/he was quick enough on the uptake they may not only get to burgle the place, but a couple of days' free board (and boredom)?

those guys can duke it out over who sleeps in the bathtub-- i think an air mattres in the pool would be more comfortable-- even if a bit chilly.

i'm sure i'll bring along my queen size futon, and if the night is chilly-- i'll invite some warm cozy soul to snuggle up with me for warmth. Kids are best-- they are little radiators, but they are all to often squirmers, too.

Let's play fair folks. No "calling" or making "dibs."
It's a question of all getting along and finding room for all the girls and boys and childes ... and cleaning up after yourselves. No wet towels on the bathroom floor or on bedding. Please!

Would anyone who cannot or will not eat certain foods please let me know? Thank you. I have created a special folder in my e-mail for palooza info.--otherwise I'd never be able to keep track of it all. So hopefully, it'll be safe.

So if you have a palooza folder, that suggests we shall be paloozers (sic!) {or maybe paloozas?} when thus engaged, and so what we will be doing will be to palooze, v.i.
