OP Dear Musick: please take a look at this link, which uses the term "diastema" apparently as a musical term. It is in German, but there is an option to get it in English.

wwh - Thanks for the link, and although I am familiar with Cage and the context of some of this comparison, the analysis means nothing (to me) without being familiar with the pieces themselves. It is similar to how I did analysis on Copland way back when... until I learned how utterly foolish that was.
If this word is in the English version, I could not find it... the German version won't help anyway (nicht einen sprechenzie Deutsch (now there is a bunch o'bull... was I close?)). Please send me a PM with the corresponding paragraphs, and I'll take a close look.
