eta's thundersnow thread reminded me of something I wanted to ask. The other day I saw a news photo of which part of the caption mentioned that it was a snow farm. Is this another recent term, or do I just live where there isn't that much snow? To me, it just looked like those huge piles pushed up by snowplows around the edges of parking lots, etc. We do not have a name for those, here.

We use the land in the circular ramps of Interstate exits and
entrances: and pile snow there. It is a snow farm.

If you were to ask me...I'd think its where they produce snow for the ski fields. Seems we can 'farm' anything these days.

I believe that artificial snow for skiing slopes is produced on site. Wouldn't really make mush sense otherwise. It doesn't travel well. No, as Luke said, it is an area where unwanted snow is dumped when there's no room in the immediate vicinity.

Parking lots of various stores can lose up to half their
parking to piles of snow....so they pay to have it
hauled away to a snow farm. No parking lot...no customers.

Why would you even have a snow farm in Alaska, there's
plenty of snow and plenty of room to shovel it. Isn't there?

Luke,

That was just my attempt at humor, based on the Alaska seafood marketing slogan, "Friend don't let friends eat farmed salmon; eat Alaska wild salmon."

Gotcha! Never heard the salmon thing.
But we have something similar that appears here with all
the land in this part of the world: give it to the
Palestinians and Israelis, we'd all get more population
and they would never find each other, hence the fighting
might stop. Somewhat racial profiling probably, but
definitely a commentary on all the land here, through
which you can travel and see nothing for hours.
