there is a single word that describes a story or a novel in which the protagonist undertakes a journey of self-discovery, and becomes victorious at the end.
Can any one help out?
For example, tom sawyer or catcher in the rye would be perfect examples of what a "....." means.

You're welcome, you did the work yourself. It's a pure German word, but I see it's in all the dictionaries. I only knew the word Bildroman so far, which is not in the dictionaries.

Bilden is the German verb for 'to form; educate; build'. So a Bildungroman is an 'education novel'.
