Does anyone know if there is a word for a Basket maker/weaver?
Back in the dim and distant past I thought the name was Osier - but modern dictionaries seem not to show this.

How about basketmaker? Osier is a kind of willow tree the twigs of which are used in basket weaving. If resort to foreign languages is desired: French vannier and German Korbflechter.

Yes basketweaver or basketmaker would be the logical choices. There is also the more obscure skepmaker or willower.

violin maker v.s. luthier horse shoer v.s. farrierbasket maker v.s. ??? Sure. Why use a specific term when a more general one is available? Maybe you should've looked them up.

Cribbed from a list online: basketman, fanwright, padmaker, ripper, rippier, swell maker trugger, whisket weaver, willow plaiter, willow weaver. Osier peelers (aka withy peelers) removed the bark from willow rods prior to the basket weaving. (Is V.S. an initialism for Vanilla Sky?)

trugger = a maker of trugs (OED2) trugger = tree hugger (UD)
I think the latter has more of a future..

It means you're a better proofreader than I am. ...so I'm not as ignorant as I thought I was? Are you implying it's just a typo for vs.? I thought it might be some other abbreviated Latin term I didn't know!

I still prefer luthier and farrier (and I know a violin maker and horse shoer who do as well) but that is because I have romance in my soul (v.s. any ability to spell or type) PS the farrier specialized in orthopedic shoes for horses.

A violin maker is a luthier but a luthier isn't necessarily a violin maker. I know a luthier. I'll ask him if he's ever made any violins.
Likewise a horse shoer can be a farrier but a farrier doesn't necessarily shoe horses.

A violin maker is a luthier... Not to be confused with the English surname Luther which comes from luter (a lute player) or the German surname Luther which comes from the Greek for 'liberator'...

Re: oh, and a corve (didn't notice at first) is a coal basket
a coal basket? vs a coal scuttle?
i like the old specific names for crafts too. some are pretty simple, (glover!) others, a require a bit of thought--farrier and collier.. and there are different classes of work.. the collier (coal miner) vs the breaker--some one who works above ground breaking the coal into sized lumps-- (goose egg was one size as i recall.. but there were other sizes..(anyone?)
in textiles, there were the spinners (spinster when they worked from home) weavers and fullers..

These are nice ones. Would it be asking to much if you could spare a long search and tell what their business is about?
Rippier? Vanneur? Whisket weaver? Fanwright?
