Perhaps, according to this article The writer did not touch on the increasing use of "noo" for "nyoo" by the same demographic here in New Zealand, also probably influenced by the same source.

Kia ora Robin,
I love the 'R'ful, and Rhoticity. What about Rhotisserie? A rolled R anyone? No?

I must point out also that I always pronounce 'Data' as 'Darta' and not 'Dater'

Kia orana, olly. Bauer is very good. I enjoyed his "Language Myths" with Peter Trudgill. I think most Kiwis ptobably say "dahta" rather than "date-a". Except when talking about the android.

Aussies too. It's day-ta not dah-ta.

And definitely nyew not noo.

EDIT: OOPS, my mistake, I meant to say the opposite (see below). In other words I say it the same way as them.

Yeah, except for the name of the Android, but since I'm not a Trekkie that doesn't come up all that often for me.

I understood olly and Robin as saying the opposite, that most New Zealanders say "dah-ta", not "day-ta". Robin said something about except an android, but someone else would have to explain that.

This from Wikiwikiwiki:

Data is a character, portrayed by Brent Spiner, in the Star Trek fictional universe. Designed and built by Doctor Noonien Soong, Lieutenant Commander Data is an android who serves as the second officer and chief operations officer aboard the starships USS Enterprise-D and USS Enterprise-E

Oops, that should have read "It's dah-ta not day-ta"
Must have been the 20 hours sleep in five days...
