I am looking for some information on the word,
boktos.
Where did it come from? what does it mean? origin? history? etc.

The only thing I know about it, is what I was told, that it is greek for 'balanced' i really want to confirm this information.

I have tried to find the word myself, I have looked at language translators, etc.. so far nothing.

If you can help me, that would be GREAT... Thanks so much.

this might be a clue:

"For the newsreel photographers there would be a demonstration of boktos, or Pythagorean butting, the old Greek art of self-defense, which was to be incorporated into the army's physical training program." - Charles Portis, Masters of Atlantis (1985)

By Greek, do you mean Modern or Classical. I looked in a large Classical Greek (Lewis, Short, and Jones) under βοκτος (boktos) and βωκτος (bōktos.). Zip. Online did a reverse lookup on balanced in the same (digitized) dictionary (link). Nada. Looked in a smallish Modern Greek-English dictionary (Langenscheidt) under variant spellings (in Modern Greek β is a /v/ and μπ is /b/). Also in the English under balanced entry. Nothing. Nothing in a cursory Greek Wikipedia search. Quick googling suggests it may be a name. Was this word of mouth or on a website or what? (I don't think it's a Greek word.)

Not sure what to make of tsuwm's Google Book finding in a comic novel about a secret society. See the reviews of the book on this Charles Portis site (link).
