Languagehat drew attention the other day to a remarkable collection of over 500 volumes at the University of Claifornia made available for public access over the web, such as this history of Athens up to the time of Pericles.

For heaven's sake--I thought I wouldn't find anything of interest to me, but my first hit garnered this:
It is proper to observe that the existence of isonomia as an anachronism in the Harmodius song, though it proves that the skolion is not archaic, fails to prove that isonomia could not have been an old word in use in the last part of the sixth century as a political expression. In fact, there is reason to infer the contrary—if, that is, Herodotus is a reliable guide and we interpret him correctly.

Also, it looks to me like the 3 indices listed should make it easy to locate many things.

Yes, there's a wide range of books available.

On an admin front, I keep on getting this and a few other threads flagged as New, even though there's been no change - is anyone else still getting this problem (which I gather was not uncommon after the software upgrade)?
