I'm looking for a novel that was advertised through the mailing list a couple of years ago. The story was about a small town that had a chemical exlosion. A cloud swept from the explosion over the town, and everyone in the town had perfect memories as a result. What was the name of the novel and the author?

Sorry, JD, can't remember - I obviously live in another town entirely.

I don't remember, either, JD, but maybe you should E-mail Anu and ask him?

Isn't there some very clever way to use the new improved search function on the new improved board to get at this?

I don't think you can use the board's search function to search through the AWAD E-mails. Or was yours a jocular suggestion, Fr Steve?

There is a site Search function, up in the banner; but I've not tried it. (separate from the forum Search)

There are two search functions apparent on the board. One is the topmost on most pages and it offers:

About Us | What's New | Search | Site Map | Contact Us

The one below it is limited, I think, to threads:

My Home · Main Index · Search · Active Topics
Who's Online · FAQ · User List · Calendar

I was just wonderin' if the former might help. Not jocular. Attemptedly helpful.

a "mantle" is repeating something that someone already posted. a bit of an on-going joke around here.

It's a translation of "I/S/He said that already."

It alludes to a putative "Mantle of Invisibility," usually as a protest for all to see without actually complaining. Beyond that I'll have to leave further attribution to those with broader literary exposure than mine...

(Sometimes it's used to avoid invoking the cliche "So what am I? Chopped liver?")

Can you use that in a sentence for me (he said, realizing it just was...)?

i.e. "Has this been mantled before?"

I dunno...

Dear Rainmaker ~

Nice to see you back after your four-months hiatus.

Here's another perspective on the strictly-enforced rule against mantling.

To make a post which clearly ignores one made before it and which repreats what another has already said may be (a) rude, or (b) the product of hastily scanning the thread, or (c) an honest attempt to say something in addition to what another has previously posted which falls short in the estimation of the person shouting foul.

A declaration of mantling may be (a) rude, or (b) an attempt to chastise an offender so as to prevent further misdemeanors, or (c) rude.

If this is an on-going joke in which you would like to participate, you could use the search function which accesses threads to read extensive legal discourses on the subtle variations and inflections of this sacrosanct rule. Or not.

but it's ok to say, "what am I? chopped liver?" as long as you wink.

Something about the above makes me think that just maybe Steve thinks my post was (d) rude. Would that I cared.

But remember, one man's chopped liver is another man's pâté.

Doesn't the novel seem like it would be a good story?

And as a devoted New York Yankees fan it is, indeed, an honor to see that the board has chosen to create a new eponym as a moving tribute to one of the all-time greatest Yankees, Mickey Mantle. Thanks guys.

Hi JD
Try Abebooks.com, they have a booksearch function where you put in what you remember and other readers try to come up with the title and author for you.
