I'm looking for a (better) word for retracing a conversation to determine how it progressed?

Will any of these do, tC?
Synonyms: change, discuss, reiterate, repeat, rephrase, restate, reuse, rework, rewrite, say again, state differently

Sorry, Jackie. I should have mentioned that I've already gone the thesaurus route. I'm looking for something that doesn't suggest an editing sense, as do most of those; but rather a simple search for the facts. (Hi joe!)

How about "review"?

Funny ~ as I run mentally through all the re- words, I notice how they all have established meanings other than that sought. Retrace, review, replay ...

Possibly reflect; but I think I'd go for analyze. (Btw, if you hadn't specified "a" word, I'd have put think back. That's what I do quite often: think back over a conversation.)

think back..
Now we're narrowing in; recall, recollect.. retrace.

"If you'll recollect the stages to our agreement at the last meeting, we can end this discussion quickly." "Yes, let's retrace the steps."

wwh suggests recapitulate.

or you could be looking for re-frame.

'framing' is a now a popular word (but i known and used it over 10 years.. i active try to practice a positive reframe.

sometimes, when we recall a conversation, we can learn to 'hear' the same words, but re hear the meaning behind them.
--i remember once, having a guy say 'you're looking particularly nice today' and it was clear he was insulting me.. the way he emphisized words, it made it clear he was surprize i ever looked nice..

only guy once commented on my fat ass.. and this was one of the nicest compliments i ever recieved..

there is so much to word, and language, as we replay a conversation over and over again, the words can change meaning right before our eyes. (and ears)
