A local journalist in today's Press of Atlantic City, in citing the weather term, said trof is now used interchangeably with trough. I've never seen it spelled that way, I don't like that form, I'm just not comfortable with what seems a cheapening of the language for convenience...it's more like a flimsy bastardization than an ongoing evolution of language...even good slang is better than that.

But then, of course, there's draught and draft...but the former (draught) has to be beer in my eyes.

Here's the article:

What'd'yall think?

"Trof" strikes me as one of those words that seem so clever when they are added to the names of cheap motels and cafes, such as "nu" in place of "new" and "nite" in place of "night" and like that.

All I can think of is the Tropf brothers.

They played basketball 'round these parts in the 70s. Jeff played at MSU for one year. This is an idiosyncratic issue, I know. [/ramblings of one quickly falling into the pool of ancientness]

While admitting that the ough's of the English language are ridiculously confusing to new spellers and pronouncers, it seems a bit late to change it now.
