While we're waiting for another piggy to scrub clean, you may like to try this version, in case you don't already know it:

(thanks to ozzie @ W/Origins for the reminder)

Iglet originated when a person trying to figure out the Enigma machine during WW II noted that on every setting of the machine, when you put in the name hugh the machine kicked out the nonce word iglet. It was a diagnostic test of the machine incorporated by the designers.

It became well known by the phrase:

Iglet: a kickout of hugh.

Or in my case, I had to get to Elizabeth's post before I realized that it *was a pun. Or what TEd likes to call a pun.

And TEd likes to call many things, some of which actually are, puns.

"And TEd likes to call many things, some of which actually are, puns."

Is there a name for an elliptical expression such as the above (other than "elliptical expression," thank you very much)?

(As opposed to "And TEd like to call many things puns some of which [etc.]")
