I had a phone call from the lovely Jo today, and she mentioned that she'd found out that there was a lecture today by Noam Chomsky at Edinburgh University.

"it's being video streamed after the lecture, maybe you could let AnnaS et al know..."

"You can call me Betty..."

Thanks, Mav et Jo. I wonder if ol' Noam'll be talking about linguistics for a change...

Well, Annas, given the title of the lecture...

"Illegal but Legitimate: a Dubious Doctrine for the Times"

... it seems he's *applying his linguistics.

From The Scotsman:

"The free-speech campaigner, most widely known for his political commentary and his criticism of American influence and activities overseas, will give a lecture entitled 'Illegal but Legitimate: a dubious doctrine for the times'. It deals with the danger of launching 'legitimate' attacks on countries, even though it is accepted that the attacks are 'illegal'."

That reminds me: why do Scotsmen wear kilts?

Because the cunning bloody sheep can hear a zip at 20 paces!

So Her Majesty asks a soldier in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, "What is worn under the kilt?"

And the soldier replies, "Absolutely nothing, ma'am. Everything under there is in perfect working order."
