choose one*:

a) [Scot] a fold in the skin, a wrinkle

b) a snap of the fingers

c) a small snail found in Central and South America

d) any of a variety of the iris genus native to New England, featuring showy yellow or purple blossoms

e) [acronym] Low Intensity Remote Photogrammetry

f) the hole in a donut

g) a small sucking insect that secreted a sugary cover (or test) over itself for protection

h) dessicated food; just add hot water and eat (from acronym LRRP; rations, used in Vietman by soldiers on "Long Range Reconnaisance Patrol")

i) an old Polish unit of measure, equal to 3.68 miles or 5.92 kilometers

j) [n] the noise made by frogs [v] to croak

k) a wind instrument used by the Ancient Greeks

l) (from Old English liripen, dross) the waste material that adheres to sandcast moulded metal products, usually removed with a brush before the metal has cooled

m) [slang] a monetary unit only redeemable at a company store

---

*a few of these seem quite... definitive; for all I know, there may be more than one correct answer.

LIRP, did you say?

My initial impulse is to go with L.

acronyms sound like the best bet, so it's either e] or h].

I'll pick up H (rather than drop it.)

OK, here's the thing:

I gotta eliminate right off the proverbial bat selections a, g, h, j, k, and m for spelling, grammatical or stylistic transgressions.

Now then....

Protest: it should be "secreteS" in (g), not "secreteD".

And it gets my vote.

I know I've seen lirp somewhere before, but the old brain isn't what \it used to be. Reminds me of my father's saying: I'm not always as good as I once was, but I'm once as good as I always was.

I'm just gonna guess at A

Yep, that was my problem with it, stales.

I hereby stick my neck out and vote for B

Well, looks like I'm back on track with no one voting for my def and with only Juan left, no point in trying to sucker people into voting for it or in explaining why all the wrong ones are wrong so I'll just vote:

A

Never mind, Fong. No one's voted for my def either, so I'm back to contemplating my traditional doughnut.

And either we both got it right or we both got it wrong, and, knowing your record in these things, we both must of is both got it wrong.

I'm not sure those are valid exclusions: what if the Hogmaster takes the "real" formal definition and rephrases it in more conversational language as camouflage?

I agree, wofa. :)

but it seems to have worked for her, as ASp was the onliest voter to get it right (b, that is). I'll post the compleat results (and the usual allotment of anomalies) as time permits.

I rejected B because a word with that definition should be onamonapoeic (or whatever that word is).

To make my point I snapped my fingers to listen to the sound. Boy am I embarrassed.
