Cúirt An Mheán Óiche (The Midnight Court) by Brian Merriman (1747-1805) is something of an oddity in 18th century Irish poetry in Irish. Merriman was a teacher of mathematics who lived and worked in the Munster counties of Clare and Limerick. Cúirt An Mheán Óiche, effectively his only poetic work, was written around 1780. The poem begins by using the conventions of the Aisling, or vision poem, in which the poet is out walking when he has a vision of a woman from the other world. Typically, this woman is Ireland and the poem will lament her lot and/or call on her 'sons' to rebel against foreign tyranny.

Loc: rego park i own a copy of The Midnight Court... i read it in HS (when i had already read every text book issued cover to cover.. and was looking for something interesting to read.
parents and teachers (who had never heard of it) thought it was wonderful i was reading 'literature'-- i thought borderline pornography! (well it is 'racy') and i did have a somewhat sheltered upbringing... -and things were much more conservative in those days.
(it reminds me now of the great irish song that reminds:
Maids, when you're young, Don't wed an old man
For he's go no *fullorium,
fullinhim fullorium,
Maids when you're young, don't wed an old man!
* i forget the exact nonsense word.. something like that....the meaning is clear!_________________________
