Dear etaoin: I have a ludicrous visual image of you as a
shepherd, bringing a lamb to the fold draped over your
shoulders, legs in your left hand, a mantle to keep you warm.

Oh, Bill, what a great term! I've seen many times this draped effect on ceramics--quite popular among those artists--and have seen, too, the scarf draped on helmets, but certainly never heard this very specific term. Thank you very much for digging it up for us! I will certainly commit 'lambrequin' to memory. Must think up a mnemonic first!

Well...brequin could sound like 'breakin''--and you wouldn't want to break that expensive ceramic work of art of your grandmother's [but not to my taste]. But the 'lam' part? Hmmmm.... Lam...lamb...limb...land... Can't figure out anything now except wanting that ceramic to land on a lamb without breaking. Lambrequin. Lamb breaking the ceramic fall. That might work.
