A peculiar word to praise a water color.
"They all thought he had talent; at Heidelberg they had admired his water colours, Miss Wilkinson had told him over and over again that they were chasing; even strangers like the Watsons had been struck by his sketches. "

Again:
" He had brought it to London and when he was most depressed he had only to read a few pages to be transported into those chasing attics where Rodolphe and the rest of them danced and loved and sang."

Now I do understand that a chase is a water path--as in a mill chase through which the water flows. Chase is a wonderful name for a person--there's the mill chase, of course, but there is also the hunt--and the idea of life's being a hunt, whether for truth, wealth, power, love...

To have a character describe an artist's colors as 'chasing' is really wonderful in my mind--these are vibrant waters, full of life.

But what of these chasing attics? I don't get that. Haven't referred to Onelook yet, but chasing attics doesn't ring any kind of a bell.

i only know chasing as 'trim'-- a locket with gold chasing is a locket with an ornimental trim, not quite a braid, but braided--the way water in a mill chase tumbles over itself, and catching the light, looks braided..

gold (i suppose there are other types, but gold and chasing seem to go together like cold and beer) chasing can be applied to things besides jewelry... furniture, perhaps, but i have never heard any chasing as use above...
