"Presently his bugle was heard singing in the cedars, and in an incredibly short time a single gun with its caisson, each drawn by six horses and manned by its full complement of gunners, came bounding and banging up the grade in a storm of dust, unlimbered under cover, and was run forward by hand to the fatal crest among the dead horses. "

Webster's 1913 Dictionary

Eng.]

2. (Mil.) The detachable fore part of a gun carriage,

--Totten.

{Limber strake} (Shipbuilding), the first course of inside
planking next the keelson.

The bargeman that doth row with long and limber oar.
--Turbervile.

\Lim"ber\, v. t.
To cause to become limber; to make flexible or pliant.
--Richardson.

Here's a picture of a civil war cannon, and its limber. The way they are pictured is misleading. When underway, the cannon was pointing to the rear.

So the without the limber, it carries a gun and with the limber it's just a carriage?

The limber is the two front wheels, which can be connected to rear "tail" of the cannon, the wheels of which then make a four wheeled wagon, which towed the cannon with muzzle to the rear, pointing downwards. The cannon could not be used until it had been "unlimbered", so other types of behaviour
for getting ready for action is called "unlimbering".

From the Internet:
""Who's to say?" the student asks, deflating your carefully crafted argument... "That's just your opinion," responds another, reducing argument to autobiography and making you wish you had a loaded gun... "If it's right for him, it's right," offers [a third], unlimbering the concept philosophers dread most: right-for-him. . "

Very interesting, wwh. Unlimbering means you're getting ready for a fight, I suppose.

I suspect it's the older equivalent of detaching the tractor from a tractor-trailer truck, leaving the trailer/hauler/carriage/gun behind, ready to be put into action.
