We did it! We won the World Cup! And by we I hope you understand I mean me personally. Can't believe it, up at 7.30 this morning to watch it. SO put his lucky rugby shirt on, and I did my duty by running into the kitchen every time Johnny Wilkinson went for a kick (I put him off with my incessant chanting of, 'oh, no, he's going to miss, he's going to miss, no, oh no') Can't believe we won! That's not what England are supposed to do. Ha Ha, we won! So glad it was raining, so glad Johnny was okay after that rough tackle. So glad the Wallabies took out the All Blacks. So glad.

Well, I'm confused. He puts his lucky rugby shirt on and then Jackie asks whether this is soccer...and Faldage on another thread asks a question tongue-in-cheek that I took to be a fun thread, but still one to develop, but it was just Faldage's being tongue-in-cheek...
All that said:
It sounds like rugby to me, but then there's Jackie and her soccer question, and she knew Fadage's tongue was in his cheek...so I'm confused. Still sounds like rugby to me, so if it isn't, please show me what Jackie saw that I didn't...
Edit PS: Oh, Dody, congratulations on your rubgy World Cup or soccer World Cup. I wait to be enlightened.

I had serious motives.

Yes, Jonny did his country proud. Well done, and I am certain that the Wallabies gave your lot a much tougher time than the ABs would have.

OK, now I got a question. (I mean, I have a question). Dody expresses her joy at England's win with the title "SWEET CHARIOTS." On Another Board, someone expressed his joy with the post title "Coming For To Carry Me Home." What's the connection between the gospel hymn and England's national team?

No so fast, that man. The ABs may well have given a good account of themselves, although I'm not saying that they would have won.
As it was, I watched the game at the Old Grammarians club wearing my ABs jersey anyway. I was indifferent as to the outcome, being an alien in the home country of one team and with the other team coming from an alien country. May, I thought, the least hopeless team win ... which wish was granted.
Good game, though.

"Swing Low" is the England RFU's "official" anthem.

Quote from the url given re "Swing Low": "One of the English wingers that day was the Nigerian-born Chris Oti who ran in three tries in the second half"
Ah - those were the days. Running rugby. The way it's still played in the Southern Hemisphere. Unfortunately now it's all about points on the board, especially in the Northern Hemsiphere. Hang the crowd entertainment aspect.
Jason Robinson's try WAS a beauty but. Not as good as Mortlock's length of the field effort against the bleks though.

You're right, it wasn't as good, it was better - any idiot with good legs can score an intercept, with all the defenders totally wrong-footed.

Aw, bit bitter are we? Don't worry, I completely know how you feel. I'm a bit worried about England to be honest, I think the whole country may just explode. This is the first world cup we have won since 1966. The whole country is geared up for humiliating failure and crushing disappointment--it's the English way. I don't know what we're s'posed to do now. And it's really going to mess up the song.

Dody, I'm afraid your reply to my post makes no sense at all. I had made a post to stales in which I said that the English try was better than the first try Australia scored against the ABs, and you respond by calling me bitter? I have long thought that intercept tries, whoever scores them, are simply a matter of fortuitous timing and good speed. I am thoroughly bemused trying to figure out why a post I made that was complimentary to your team should draw an accusation that I was bitter.

So happy here too!
Saturday morning - one look out the window - pissing it down - no pub. Down neighbour Andrew's - his ex had stayed overnight and a friend of hers was coming along. So I took down some toast, he brought out the whisky. "Eek you're drinking at this time?" from the girls. (But then, they had their own competition going - which was the ugliest team in the World Cup, so....) Well, say we: "Rugby without alcohol is like sex without a woman." Shuts 'em up.
And then we, in control, start making mistakes. Andre Watson doesn't know what scrummaging is. And they bloomin' equalise. Extra time!!! I cannot take it without another two stiff shots.
And then, finally, watching the scrum and saying "It's drop goal distance... he's going to take it, surely" And yes, they sent it back to God in the pocket and he kicked it sweetly, right-footed, over the bar. My flatmate calls him The God. I think God will do.
Coming for to carry me home....

Jonny Wilkinson won the game. Wendall Sailor lost the game. The remainder played a hard-fought draw.

Thank god we've got idiots in Oz. Not too many in Zild lately - or safrika for that matter. Hang on; come to think of it - none in PommyLand for many a moon.

Well, my Ocker mate, as the famous philosopher once pointed out, "Two out of Three ain't bad". Remind me again, how many rugby trophies did the Wallabies win or retain this year, exactly? Why does asking that question make me think of doughnuts?
