Modern readers are not likely to know why four poster beds were desirable a couple hundred years ago. Houses were drafty, and not heated at night. So it was desirable to have the mattress high off the floor, and the corners supported by posts high enough to hold a canopy to shield sleeper from drafts. My father had such a bed, but not with a canopy, because we did have central heating.
