The definition of geezer as an odd, eccentric person is known. What is the origin of that slang word?
Thanks,
Arno

According to the AHD: Probably alteration of dialectal guiser, masquerader, from Middle English gysar, from gysen, to dress, from gyse, guise, fashion. See GUISE.

[A dial. pronunciation of guiser.]
A term of derision applied esp. to men, usu. but not necessarily elderly; a chap, fellow.

where guiser itself (one who guises) is pronounced /gai zer/
so a geezer is just a guy. wotta coincidence...

I've never thought of "geezer" as implying eccentricity... I save "curmudgeon" for that.

"Geezer" speaks to me of advanced age and the correlated stereotype of decrepitude. [Sheepish shrug from a 29-year-old emoticon]

You get to be an apprentice geezer at age 50 if you join AARP right away. If you don't join AARP you automatically became an apprentice geezer at 55. Journeyman geezerhood strikes at 60 and full geezerhood, AKA Master Geezer, at 65.

I am but a lowly apprentice geezer.

Okay, you're a LAG, then. Tsuwm's an OP. (Oh dear, this really should be under the acronym thread.)

I reckon that makes me an AGA--apprentice geezer's apprentice.

Harumph! Master Geezer indeed.
Harumph.
I don't mind the tags given by Anu (bless his name) as we amass posts but I refuse to be classified by a mere youth based solely on my age!
Lemme tell you, stripling, the closer you get to 80 the younger it looks.
A little more respect for these (hard earned) gray hairs, if you please.
