I hope this hasn't been discussed because I'm too lazy to look it up. But, if it hasn't, why is punch pleased?

Many thanks,
WW, who is pleased as punch today

Geoff, did you just make that up? You know I'm gullible and I'll believe you unless you set me straight, me and my little brown jug trimmed in red, white, and blue!

WW

PS: Who was the puncher? Punch or Judy? I have mental images of one of them hitting the other one over the head with a stick of some sort...

...and another Punch & Judy site, with a slightly more USn perspective:
http://blindkat.fateback.com/other/tobit.html

It appears that "pleased as Punch" did originate with this popular little deformed wife-beater

So is the spontaneously mixed drink "punch" named after the word (meaning "thump", as it does pack a wallop) or the motley character? Or both?!
