OP Two whole people here actually knew this word, doggone their little ornery hides! They were, however, kind enough to submit red-herring def.'s., and I thank them for that. I had never seen it before--at least not with the y in it--and just fell in love with it! So--
a.) A very rare orchid of the phalareopsis family, having three
petaled flowers with the middle petal enlarged into a lip, and
differing from the others in shape and color. Found chiefly
in the mountain heights of the Philippines. (Luke) Voted for by Faldage
b.) a small but ornately decorated metal disc, to be attached to the glove (gauntlet) protecting the sword-wielding hand (wofa) Voted for by Luke in--I mean and --the Buff.
c.) a string instrument where strings are pulled by a built in wheel that is turned by means of a handle. First images date from the 13th century. (Branshea)
d.) A cross between a moonflower and a dandylion, giving a yellow flower that blooms in the night (Bexter) Voted for by Branshea.
e.) Seasoned gay male on the hunt for tender game. A male cougar. (Candy) Voted for by the country Doctor and olly
f.) A large bronze disc with inscribed Linear A characters. (Faldage) Voted for by Bexter (yay, so glad to see you again!).
g.) a loose outer garment worn e.g. by soldiers over their armour (also mandilion) (hist); (with cap) the name of a cloth supposed to bear the imprint of the face of Jesus From the Chambers Giant paperback dictionary, printed in 1996 and reprinted in 1997, 1998, and 2000. Voted for by Candy.
The hogmistress will take the Hogmaster's stated privilege of tallying up any old way she pleases, and thus will award at least five extra votes to E because this has got to be one of the best daffynitions ever submitted to this game!
woo hoo I win. I'd like to thank my supporters, olly, Wofa and our hogmistress with the moistest, Jackie but you shouldn't have.....
I'm not sure about Luke in the Buff. But I forgive you, Jackie
because it was a great word, even tho I was one who knew it.
I say that in all humility, because I had just read about it
a week ago, and asked if I could submit a phony daffy. That
is what makes this game so great. I don't understand how
you tally up the points and how somebody wins, it is the
making up of the word and the voting that matter to me.
OK, Candy, with all those moist points, your turn to submit
a word.
It's so hot around here (100'sF, 40 C) that I'd go in the buff if
it did not offend Buffalo Shrdlu.

After Jackie's comment, I did not want to take your name
"in vain", as it were.

OP When we first started this game, points almost mattered. That quickly went by the wayside! If you notice, I did not post a tally prior to awarding my "at least" five extra points.

So how do the points work, or are they just a figment of
imagination???

Points are given to anyone whose daffynition is chosen according to the number of people who choose that daffynition. No points for choosing one's own daffynition. Points are awarded to anyone who chooses the correct definition. The person running the hogwash gets points if no one selects the correct definition. How many points in each case is up to the person running the hogwash.
all of which is laid out very imprecisely in the "hogwash® rules(?)" thread, pinned to the top of this forum.
