hello,

this was a word i stumbled across somewhere, meaning, i think 'someone who uses large words to make themselves seem more inelligent or knowledgeable'.
i'd like to know - is this correct?

thanks.

the adjective is lexiphanic, the noun is lexiphanicism:

lexiphanic \Lex`i*phan"ic\ (l[e^]ks`[i^]*f[a^]n"[i^]k), a. [Gr. lexifa`nis a phrase monger; le`xis speech + fai`nein to show.] Using, or interlarded with, pretentious words; bombastic; as, a lexiphanic writer or speaker; lexiphanic writing.

and now I'm going to once again suggest that queries such as this can be easily satisfied by using http://www.onelook.com/ as the first resource.

Surely the point of this is "questions and answers about words" so anything related to "questions and answers about words" is fine. It is useful to know about other sites but surely not essential!

sure... I'm just suggesting, in my overly blunt fashion, that YCLIU and sometimes get a quicker answer.

We have a didactic example right here. Fellow poster Jeff is a self-described lexiphane (???). Perhaps the initiator of this thread would like to look at said poster's bio and some of his posts, for illustration. ;-)

Tsuwm, you wrote:

I have to say that I think you're pretty sharp!
Also that sometimes it takes bluntness to make a point!
