I am very pleased to hear that the word dauphin _is_ actually derived from dolphin. Tom Sawyer read too many romantic tales, too much Dumas and fantasisied that he was the 'dolphin' (meaning Dauphin) and would escape to claim his birthright when he was locked up by his father. Looks like Tom had it right. He also wanted to dig his way out with just a knife, Count of Monte Christo style, though his buddy the slave was able to get in the house by taking a board off the wall. The dangers of indiscriminate reading!
