More on the European woodpecker:

"Yaffle \Yaf"fle\, n. [Probably imitative of its call or cry.]
(Zo["o]l.)
The European green woodpecker (Picus, or Genius, viridis).
It is noted for its loud laughlike note. Called also eccle,
hewhole, highhoe, laughing bird, popinjay, rain
bird, yaffil, yaffler, yaffingale, yappingale,
yackel, and woodhack."

Webster's 1913 (*Note: nickle ain't listed)

Picus viridis, the Green Woodpecker

It laughs (yaffles) a lot.

Here's a site where you can see a couple of prints of it:

http://www.birdsofbritain.co.uk/bird-guide/green-woodpecker.htm

Apparently, it's common in the British Isles.

Edit:

Faldage--you've gotta take a look at this photograph. The European green woodpecker is a very motley-looking bird:

And a webpage of nickle stamps--this is rather quiet-looking page, but still interesting:

Put the little nickel in.
In the nickelodeon,
All I've got is lovin' you
And music, music, music!

((there's a challenge, Dr. Bill...can't find that complete lyric online anywhere)

And, my, Theresa...but there are strange birds, especially woodpeckers, in Gray World, aren't there?
