Ok, this has been driving me nuts for several months now! AWAD sent out a word a few months back (nymphomaniac). I was told that there is a male version of this word. I have not been able to find it. Anyone know?

The condition is known as 'satyriasis.' But I don't know the corresponding form, doesn't seem readily available anywhere (chin up, though, I'm sure someone here already knows it or will find it for you).

I guess the obvious form would be satyr, but that conjures up the image of a horned guy tooting a horn (ultimately horny, I suppose ;). a couple of other possibilities are gynecomaniac and tentigo (the latter being a pretentious [and Latin] way of saying lecherousness).

"nymphomaniac" links two defining features: being of female gender and being obsessed with the opposite sex.
Since, as we have seen, the notion of opposite (or "..version") has to be approached with pragmatism: what about average heterosexual male?

Life is full of surprises. I thought I knew exactly what 'nymphomaniac' meant in etymological terms, but just found this in Merriam-Webster: Etymology: New Latin, from nymphae inner lips of the vulvaConclusions: the overall male equivalent for a 'nymphomaniac' would be a glandimaniac (sp?) However, if we limit the field to heterosexual males, the equivalent to 'nymphomaniac' would probably be 'nymphomaniac'!

while I was only able to come up with satyr(omania) and a couple other synonyms for the male obsession, I find that there are *many words for nymphomania: andromania, clitoromania, phallomania, hysteromania, and uteromania. I think wsieber is on to something!

Surely, priapic just means having an erection. It doesn't indicate who or what the erection is directed at, and a man can be obsessive about sex without an erection all the time.

Where does the redundancy come in? It might be needlessly specific (though having known men who at least seemed uninterested in the whole business I'm not sure I would agree) but it's surely not redundant unless you think all men are average heterosexuals, something I would definitely dispute.

Hello Bingley, Since you insist on a scientific treatment of this question (something I usually concur with), we should begin with questioning the notion of " male version of this word". What should the requested word have in common with "nymphomaniac", and what should be the defining difference? You will agree that we end up knee-deep in the swamp here ..

But, surely, nymphomania is an obsession with the sexual act, and masculinity - however much it may be rooted in the basic need to reproduce, and with as many different females as possible - in human males is sublimated into many different endeavours. These range from succeeding at business or sport to lavishing large amounts of time, energy and money on mechanical things such as cars or motor-bikes - almost anything so that he doesn't have to actually come into contact with females very much. So priapic doesn't fill the - er - bill.
