What about wolfwomen?
It's lycanthropy, not lycandropy, ephew. What's sexist is the notion that one must be male, andropos to be human, anthropos.
Now werewolf, on the other hand...

Lycanthomisogyny discrimination against female werewolves. As a matter of fact, my girlfriend occasionally turns into a ferocious and frightening canine beast at an interveral roughly equivalent to the frequency of the full moon.

It's lycanthropy, not lycandropyAh, we've covered this before: http://wordsmith.org/board/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=words&Number=50745Slapped wrists for me, thinking of misanthropist as hater-of-males (when I knew it wasn't really ) Now werewolf, on the other hand..And wolfman, of course...

Lycanthomisogyny discrimination against female werewolvesMislycogyny rolls of the tongue a little easier, I reckon, Alex. Though for discrimination rather than hatred, errm, Lycogynism, perhaps ?

It's wolf man because the character is the wolfman, and he is a man (how's that for explanatory redundancy? ). But I've seen movies where a Gypsy woman is the suspect and she is referred to as a werewolf. So any human who turns into a were-animal becomes were- plus the name of that animal. Weredog, werebear, werewhale . Attaching a gender to it, dogman or bearwoman, is simply a matter of convenience. Now excuse me while I go sharpen my fangs!

she is referred to as a werewolf
But the were- is from the OE, wer, male human, cognate with the Latin vir.

This appears in the text of the link provided giving audiences the escapism they were seeking at the close of World War II Flapdoodle! The movie was made in 1941 and the USA did not enter WWII until Dec 1941. Arrrggghhh©

wer-, were-Yeahbut®, Yeahbut®...language is constantly evolving, Faldage. It's called descriptivism...remember? Notice in the 1911 encyclopedia passage it's still wer-; so when and why did it change to were-? Perhaps when some frightened soul kept crying out, "Where de wolf?!!"...and they dropped the "h"?

the were- is from the OE, wer, male human, cognate with the Latin virI'd always assumed the were- bit was related to weird, whch also ties in with fate (Weird Sisters), magic and change. All the meanings attached to wyrd work really well in this context, and you can imagine wyrdwolf (for instance) becoming wyrwolf then werewolf. Almost seems a shame if it's wrong.
