I've long been aware of the word dentiloquist, one who speaks through the teeth -- it's in OED2 and gives Blount as the source (through dentiloquent). but along comes Jeffrey Kacirk in his 2010 Forgotten English calendar with dentriloquist, giving the same meaning. I think Kacirk must have conflated Blount's word with ventriloquist, which is also first cited in Blount's 1656 Glossographia.

unless, of course, Blount had it wrong. link

The R in ventriloquist would be part of the root ventr-, 'belly. The root in dentiloquist would be dent-, 'tooth'. I would say Blount has it right and Kacirk has interpolated the R wrongly from ventriloquist.

I would say that you are likely correct. I'll take your word for it.

Proctoloquist, if you don't mind mixing Greek and Latin roots, anoloquist otherwise. Personally I think the former is more understandable and just sounds better. Besides, proct- has made it into New Latin.

I kinda like the "i", as in proctiloquist. Any issues with that?

Goes well with my favorite neologism, ignoranus...

proctiloquist

There's always proctoteretes 'an ass-observer' compliments of Aristophanes who coined the verb whence my offering came, and also the great adjective dasyproctian 'having a hairy ass'. How about pygirhetorician 'butt-orator'?

I'd like to assume a place in this high-class dialogue. I hope I pass muster, and won't be crass enough to invite harassment

Well, we may find ourselves the butt of some jokes. In the end, though, the bottom line will show the seat of the problem. I have a "haunch" that it might be someone on his or her duff, behind the computer screen; a real pun bum. You know, the ones who have a lot of cheek...

PS I like your quotation :0)

I see where the pygidial element made its presence known earlier, so I'll fatten up the conversation with "steatopygia," a fine word if ever there were one.
