I was just doing an internet search for examples of split infinitives when today's wordaday email came in with the quote: 'To freely bloom... ' Does anyone know of other examples in English literature? The only reference that kept coming up was: 'To boldly go... ' from Star Trek.

They're everywhere. Most good writers don't bother themselves with rules that were cobbed together in the 19th century by a bunch of busybodies who thought they understood the language better than the folks who use it every day.

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage has a nice entry on split infinitives. This book is one of the best, up-to-date, and historically savvy English usage books I know of.
Ceci n'est pas un seing.
