I listen to the radio a lot (NPR) and on the radio are many interviews. I've begun to hear, in the last few months, the interviewee respond to the interveiwer's "Welcome!" with an equally hearty "Welcome!" instead of the expected "Thank you!"
Is this a trend? (I've heard it at least the requisite three times). Anybody have any ideas on what's going on here?

Haven't heard this myself, but maybe, in our digital age, the listeners see the programme more as a 'space' in which discussion can take place rather than a station's broadcast in which they are merely partaking. Not sure if that makes sense.

Or either that or the interviewee is at a totally different location from where the interviewer is and feels as much welcoming the interviewer as the interviewer is the interviewee.

It makes a lot of sense to me, belligerentyouth. Very astute of you.
There are no separate stages any more. It's all one stage. Everyone's connected with everyone else.
That's what "connectivity" is all about. It's a new paradigm and it makes sense that we would develop new conventions, including new omnicast greetings, to reflect that.
I say "omnicast" because we may need a new coinage to express the idea that everyone participating in a broadcast is a broadcaster in the new world of digital communications.

perhaps this an echo of the "forget to say you're welcome" syndrome. it is very common (and I think we have discussed this here) for people to reply to "thank you" with another "thank you" instead of replying with the traditional "you're welcome". so now, people hearing "welcome" get flustered and just repeat the "welcome"...

everyone participating in a broadcast is a broadcaster in the new world of digital communications. - The downside of this trend is that the direction of information flow is no longer clearly defined. Like in a sinuous sluggish stream, this results in numerous eddies and stagnating backwaters..
