Mike Hargrove, the new manager of the Seattle Mariners professional baseball team, grew impatient with the mental errors and lack of hustle demonstrated by his charges in the first few games of Cactus League ball. New first baseman Richie Sexson (who cost the Mariners $50-million for four years) committed two errors the day before, attempting to field ground balls, and was back on the field casually practicing wrapping his glove around ground balls hit to him. The new skipper reportedly chewed Sexon out for his lack of hustle and, when asked about it by reporters, told them that he was unhappy with Sexon "non-challanting" ground balls.

it would be difficult to pick out the use of nonchalant as a verb; but nonchalanting gets 80 gh and (on a quick glance) dates back at least to 1997.

Sporting professionals and commentators are a great source of neologisms, huh - brilliant! I think it's because they have to describe essentially the same things over and over - they have to be inventive.

One from Australia came at the end of a real thrashing in Aussie Rules - the speaker called it a 'destroy-ation'!

Can't resist doing a limerick for "non-chalanting", Father Steve. :)

A ballplayer pumped up on fame
Whose hustle has gone a bit lame
Will do his workout
Without breaking out
In a sweat, nonchalanting his game.

Well, some of the sports announcers aren't the most brilliant folk, and their coinages are inadvertent. But one advertent one locally is "travishamockery", which is now making its way into nonsports discussion.

from a Miller Lite beer advert, during the recent election season:

the scene is a political debate
This whole thing is a travesty, and a sham, and a mockery. It's a travishamockery!!!
<no making up words..>
Burgle Flickle!

but perhaps the sports usage came first?
