We're getting a Siberian husky pup simply because my parents' last dog was a Siberian husky they'd rescued--and loved. The litter is four weeks old and we'll see the pups this weekend to choose ours, most definitely a female. We won't take the pup home for another four weeks, but I do agree: I need puppy lessons, too, especially since I've never been responsible for a pup.

That's a great idea and a pretty neat site. OTOH, a big part of the fun for us is doing the research, visiting the shelters, meeting new dogs, and the wonderful people who care for them. For example, even if we're not going to get a blue tick, I'm glad to know for sure now where the name comes from. Moreover, I get tickled seeing one of the girls (particularly the younger one) go up to a slightly unruly and strange dog and within minutes having it walking alongside as it should.
thanks and that site is a definite bookmark, k

Sparteye, I've been meaning to ask you. Does a newfie drool when it stays inside the house?
Hubby has been aching to get one for the longest time, but I've always read that they are great droolers and the idea of not being able to walk barefoot in the house for 12 years doesn't excite me.

I've read that Newfoundlands can spread drool in a 12-ft arc when shaking their mighty heads.

In much the same way that Saint Bernards (who were capable of producing and dispensing drool by the quart) were bred to be "dry mouth," some clever Newfoundland breeders have bred Newfies to be "dry mouth", as well, and having one of these saves one from having to keep a bib on the little darlings at all times.

Jeffie doesn't drool. But, he has amazingly viscous saliva, which gets all over his food dish and anyplace else from which he snatches food (like, *sigh*, the table, since he can grab something while walking past and never break stride). His fur during shedding season (like, *sigh* NOW) is something to behold. Does anybody want some extremely fluffy pillow stuffing?

I once knew a woman who bred Newfies. She was also a knitter and a spinner of yarn. She brushed her Newfoundlands regularly, saved the hair which she removed from the brush, and spun it into yarn .. no kidding ... which she then knit into a sweater.

The only problem with a garment like this is that, when you take it off and put it on the shelf, you must command it, firmly, to "Stay!"
