I was just reading tsuwm's "WARNING: Off topic post" and it suddenly occurred to me that that some rules are more important than others. And the ONLY rule which is really, really important, no-one ever posts a "WARNING" about.

It's the one rule everyone can agree on. It's the one rule that binds us all together. It's the one rule that will put a smile on everyone's face --- and keep it there.

It's called "the Golden Rule".

I didn't invent it so I don't feel bashful about quoting it:

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Ain't it beautiful. It makes all the other rules look like playskool.

I don't think anyone is going to bash the Golden Rule. Do you?

Correct Biblical Quotation [supplied by Zed in "Golden Rule" thread]:

Matthew 7:12 "Therefore whatever you want others to do for you, do so for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (NAS)

Nice sentiment and all, but it assumes that people know what they want, and that which they desire is that which is best, or at least good for them. The Golden Rule does, as such, only go so far towards solving life's (and AWAD's) dilemmas.

Or would you have a masochistic and self-hating person do unto you that which they would have done to themselves?

Therre are many Golden Rules. My favorite is the Wiccan:
hi mav!

"An it harm no one, do what thou wilt" (i.e. do what every you want to, as long as it harms nobody, including yourself).

"Golden showers" in response to "Golden Rule"!

I just did a Google search to confirm my suspicion that "golden showers" is a reference to an act usually regarded as a sexual perversion. It is.

Link with warning removed at Jackie's request.

I assume that there must be some other meaning for "golden showers" which the poster of this heading intended. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any other meaning in my Google search.

Others may think "golden showers" means what I suspected it means, so I hope the member who posted this term will supply the meaning which he actually intended to clear up the confusion.

I truly hope the level of discussion on this Board has not deteriorated to the point where "Golden Showers" is considered an appropriate reply to "Golden Rule" regardless of the identity of the person who posted "Golden Rule" [assuming the pornographic meaning I confirmed in my search is the meaning the poster actually intended, of course].

If we have really sunk this low, I feel like I'm going to be sick. Perhaps that will give some pleasure to anyone who takes offence to my "Golden Rule" post.

I thought the title was apt, and clever, given the body of the message. This is a forum about words, after all.

Edit: Posting a link to a porno site (if that's indeed what you did) is totally inappropriate and I ask that you remove it. Anyone who wishes to google the phrase has the intelligence to do it.

musick, Just funning, huh?
oops! you'r supposed to put a smiley face there..--to bad the soft ware doesn't let you put them into subject fields.. then we know its funny, right?

good one..

barnyard explitives was posted else where as "interesting phrase" i don't use barnyard explitives often, but i do know some crude expressions.

one i always like the expression, "Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining."

i guess i am better read, since i didn't have to google to know the meaning of a golden shower. (or to know when i have been pissed on either)

Yes, please do remove the link and ref.'s to it--to me it's just an invitation to those under age--and we do have them.

I see BY's original post has now become the gift that keeps on giving.

My changing of the subject line (as I like to do on my posts... if one hadn't noticed) *seemed to fit the words BY gave... and thanks for the comment AnnaS!

Or would you have a masochistic and self-hating person do unto you that which they would have done to themselves?

I'd like my words to remain exactly as I intended them, please, (even following your "golden rule") - humorously, descriptive of and hailing the well put words (question) of belligerentyouth. Pardon me if I failed in any of my intent.
