Have you seen this proposed back formation?

nucule
(n.) any quantity of fissionable material (from nuke + -ule, as capsule, module etc.). hence NUCULAR (adj.) of or relating to atomic fission (American, =nuclear)

In the movie Air Force One, a tour guide explains to a group of tourists that the President’s airplane can withstand a nucular attack. I remember thinking that she was right, since there is no such thing. I rather doubt, however, that any airplane could withstand a nuclear attack.

In the movie The China Syndrome, Michael Douglass’ character vehemently corrects another character who frequently mispronounced nuclear as ‘nucular’. Later, however, Michael Douglass’ character mispronounces it as well.

I don’t think the foremost ambassador of the US could pronounce ‘nuclear’ correctly to save his life. Apparently, one is not required to have even a nodding acquaintanceship with one’s own language to attain a high governmental office. (I know, I know -- go ahead and slap me around.)

> one’s own language

Of course, linguistically there's the rub ~ dubbyaanddumber could probably say with some truth that his personal ideolect or language version represents the American heartland at least as well as more privileged texts... (sorry ravi!)

But I loved the idea of a post-facto justification implied by the back-formation: "hey, it sure IS spelled nucular, 'cause it comes from nucule, them bitty little thangs...!"

On that basis, I look forward one day to seeing postings here from fissionabicycule :)

Yup, and women are safe from attacks by man-eating sharks.

But of course, they are not. Nevertheless, I have no doubt that both men and women are safe from attacks by mana-eatang sharaks, and Florida is safe from being struck by hururicnes, and Iraq is safe from attacks by insnurgnts.

I’m not sure where the orange stand is located. We only have apples here.

Edit: Good link, Father Steve!
