For what it's worth, here's a link to international tongue twisters: http://www.uebersetzung.at/twister/Edit: And from that site a new word to me: Battologism: A phrase or sentence built by (tiresome) repetition of the same words or sounds.

It's more than a new word just to you, Wordwind. It's a "new word" period.
I can find "battologist and "battologize", but no "battologism".
A-H battologize \Bat*tol"o*gize\, v. t. To keep repeating needlessly; to iterate
One can argue that there is a place for "battologism" in the language, but the definition its inventor has provided is not compelling, as least to me.

If Ballologists exist, what they practice is ballology or... ballologismPerhaps, themilum. I did grant that there is place for "battologism" in the language, at least arguably, altho American Heritage does not appear to see a place for it. But, in any case, if "battologism" is a word, it does not mean the repetition of the same words or sounds within the same phrase or sentence. It means the repetition of sentences saying the same thing in the same way or different ways. That's a "battologism", themilum. It's my pleasure to set the record straight for you ... again. If I have to say this again, some will think me battological.

Grapho! Do you argue with your cat?
What you said was... "One can argue that there is a place for "battologism" in the language" which is not the same as saying... " I did grant that there is place for "battologism" in the language." now is it?
Good night graph I hope that you are happy. Your twisted tongue has twisted my poor mind and now I must rest. Good night.

"One can argue that there is a place ... I did grant that there is place ... at least arguably"themilum dissents: "which is not the same .. now is it?"Well, actually, it is the same, themilum ... if you don't take the words out of context. I don't think your mind is "twisted", themilum, nor even your motives. But if one or the other is [and I take no pleasure in it, believe me], it isn't Grapho's tongue which "twisted" them. I prefer to think that your motives in prompting Grapho to explain this to you all over again [for the 3rd time] are pedogogical. You want Grapho to illustrate the meaning of battologizing. And that is certainly commendable. And I hope Wordwind, in particular, appreciates it. [Altho I think she got it the first time. ] [Sometimes I think we don't give the Carpal Tunnels all the credit they deserve. . In any case, we'll never get any credit ourselves. But, I guess you know that. ] I think we should continue to set a good example for the Carpal Tunnels, themilum.

Or to put it another way [battopedogogically]"
I think we should continue to set a good example for the Carpal Tunnels even if they do not choose to set a good example for us. Two wrongs do not make a right.

My. You do persist. Ok grapho, now once again, s l o w l y...You'll never become a better, if you admit to having betters. That's the rule. Period. You don't see themilum and themgmt insulting our betters do you? Why?--because we have none. Except, maybe R.A. Lafferty, who is dead. Tell me, grapho, in high school, were you not invited to the Senior Prom? Did the Carpal Tunnel guys get all the chicks? Well, let me tell you one swinging thing, grapho, they still do, that is, except for the Carpal Tunnel guys that are girls. Look around...you don't see me and themgmt throwing fits and being persona non grata, do you? No. We are fully aware that this board belongs to those who input. Sure Jackie can pull the plug at her whim, and I bet that sometimes she is sorely tempted by your hijinks, but she is, so far, an honorable person, and she realizes that Awad's raison d'tait is to provide a wordwide forum to all who hold a compelling interest in language (especially English); And she knows well that diverse opinions engender interesting talk. So even you with your Paris Hilton fetish are tolerated on this board for the nonce. But be warned. If you ever hope to become a thegrapho, like themgmt and themilum, or may Pooh-bah forbid, a Carpal Tunnel...you'd best clean up your act.

I think we should continue to set a good example for the Carpal Tunnels, themilumHey, themilum. If this is what I get when I pay you a compliment, I'll have to be especially careful next time I have to correct you. Just kiddin', themilum. Any friend of themgmt is a friend of mine.

re in High School ... did the Carpal Tunnel guys get all the chicks? We didn't have any Carpal Tunnels in High School, themilum. In High School we were graded on our performance. We did have guys who made a lot of "hits", just like the Carpal Tunnels. But those guys never "scored".
