I give up. I know there's a way to access Google's image archives, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out today. Managed to find the one for Earth Day 03, but not this year's.

Unfortunately, the archive doesn't keep regional variants, apparently. Today, April 25, is ANZAC day, and google.co.nz and google.com.au have a Google graphic that reflects this, albeit in a very ozcentric fashion. A search of the archives failed to turn up any of the previous ANZAC Day Google logos, so it appears that only Google.com logos are archived.

An article in our paper today said that they are thinking of opening stock-buying in Google to the public, and that if they do, the original investors' income will skyrocket.

I wondered about that. Did you catch the date for applications? Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by April 1, 2007 and have proof of earth residency. When did this ad first appear? 25 days ago exactly, perhaps? :-)

I was at Gallipoli (Gelibolou) for the dawn ceremony on Sunday. While it was a great experience - quite moving for me, since my grandfather was there and charged up Chunuk Bair on August 8, 1915 - Google was noticeable mostly by its absence. Well, there were some 14,000 Ausralians, New Zealanders and Turks there, but funnily enough there's no Internet cafe at all!

Anzac Day in New Zealand is held on 25 April each year to commemorate New Zealanders killed in war and to honour returned servicemen and women. The day has similar importance in Australia, New Zealand's partner in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli. The ceremony itself has been continually adapted to the times, but has also steadily acquired extra layers of symbolism and meaning. ...
This was a demanding task for a force which had evolved in an ad hoc fashion, was barely sufficient for its initially envisaged garrison role, and was not fully equipped, especially in ammunition. There was much improvisation in the weeks preceding the implementation of the plan, and little time to practise the landings. ...
the plan was thrown into disarray even before the troops began landing. The Australian spearhead was mistakenly directed about two kilometres north of the envisaged landing place, nearer to Ari Burnu at what was later named Anzac Cove and on a much narrower front than envisaged in the plan. The reasons for this have been hotly debated over the last eighty years, with tides, faulty navigation by the landing fleet, belated changes of orders all being canvassed. An unauthorised alteration of direction northwards by one of the midshipmen commanding a steamboat, which pulled the whole line of tows in this direction, is the most likely explanation. ...
As a consequence the troops, on landing, found themselves confronted with far more formidable natural terrain immediately inland than they would have faced at the originally planned landing place. As they pushed inland through this difficult country of tangled ravines and spurs, the various units were split up and inextricably mixed. Only a few small, uncoordinated parties managed to reach the objective, Gun Ridge. ...
In this fighting about one in five of the 3000 New Zealanders who landed on the first day became casualties. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/Gallery/Anzac/Anzacday.htmSad, sad. CK, have you seen this? Note: the link sent me back to the intro. page; if you click on the picture, you'll get a nice enlargement. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/Gallery/Anzac/Anzac.htm

Anna--filed with the SEC? Google? Does that mean we can buy stock now?

Yes, Jackie. You will soon be able to own a piece of google. In an unusual move, google's IPO price is going to be set by public auction.

"Gallipoli" (Australian, 1981), directed by Peter Weir; written by Peter Weir and David Williamson. Available on VHS. Not a great film but touching upon the human side of the tragedy of Gallipoli. (110 minutes)

Awful film, Padre. Like most, it rewrote history to suit the story line. Unlike most, it wasn't even vaguely subtle about it.

Yes. But I have to admit that I've been looking at Midnight Express again since I got back from Turkey on Wednesday, and it's even worse that Gallipoli or Braveheart. If that's possible.

I have not seen it with my own eyes, but a chum in the Mother Country told me that there is a website devoted to revealing and discussing the historical inaccurances and distortions of Mel Gibson films. What a distinction!
