The cartoon is the one for 06/3/04 or 3/06/04 according to taste.

"Well, maybe we're a little bit vincible."

Judging from the punchline, Bingley, we are looking for a word which is neither "vincible" nor "invincible", but one which is closer to the latter than the former.

We are all vincible, but some of us are less vincible than others. And none of us are invincible.

Perhaps the word we are looking for is "ultravincible".

Even when you miss the odd layup, you can still be ultravincible.*

Invincible doesn't require any practise.

* Perhaps "ultravincible" isn't the right word, after all.

"Ultravincible" could mean "far more vincible than the average vincible person", rather than "far beyond the normal vincible person".

Perhaps we need to downgrade the word "invincible" instead of upgrading the word "vincible".

How about "invincable"?

An invincable person is capable of being invincible, but not all the time.

An invincable person misses the odd layup.

Perhaps, but you shouldn't kobe their habits.

As far as I'm concerned, what a basketballer does off court should be left up to the courts. At least until he is convicted in the media.

As a former cartoonist, I would have to say that the above analysis is rather OTT considering the cartoonist was playing it for a laugh. Which he got from me, anyway ...

Just thought I'd mention it. Continue with your mutual pendantry now, by all means!

Can someone named Vince be invinceable?
(since something of "vince" is always there )

And Vincent Price could certainly be convincingly vinceable. No "in" there, nosirree!

Perhaps the word we are looking for is "ultravincible".

Or maybe "omnivincible?" - as in "Amo vincit omnia"
Or did amo only vincit the travellers to Canterbury?

EDIT It has been pointed out to me (thanks, Dr Bill) that this should read "amor vincit omnia.

mea culpa - I plead ignorance, old age, poverty and dry-rot

...or maybe it was Alexander the Great, after conquering the entire known world, who said in his own pidgin Latin "Amo vincit omnia!" (loose translation: "I love conquering everything!")?

Nope; he would only have said that after conquering Darius' harem, surely?

Sorry, Bill, but Alexander did capture part of Darius' harem, and surprised everyone with the respectful treatment he afforded them rather than tossing them out to be raped by all and sundry.

Re Alexander the Great surprising everyone by not throwing the harem out "to be raped by all and sundry"

It seems we have Alexander to thank for the phrase "Never on Sundry".

an extra helping of Eel Island pie

Alas, they are no longer making Eel Island pie, etaoin, tho I understand they were all the rage while the eels were still running.

"A watercolour by Thomas Rowlandson gives a flavour of leisure: various boats coming and going and visitors enjoying alfresco refreshment beneath the trees. The eel pies served were famous and led to the renaming of the island although with increased pollution the eel population declined and pies are no longer made."

More on Eel Pie Island [for those who may be looking for the original recipe]:

Re all the rage while the eels were still running. "Eels got legs?!"

Well, there must have been something about those eels off Eel Pie Island 'cause those pies were as popular as Chicken Pot pies.
