to me, your screen name is pretty much the equivalent of announcing to people at the outset that you believe they are inferior to you. You might want to give some consideration to what effect that might have on people, in how they will relate to you, both here and in real life.

Especially when it must be evident that the person who was so kind as to create this forum and A.W.A.D. for us is named Anu.

smarterthanu -- th/anu...just a coincidence, I would hope.

Okay, to be entirely honest. I have never been to these kinds of websites before. I just joined because I thought that it would be neat to do something like this. I picked the name from 'out of the blue'. I had no intention of causing contention or anything to that regard. I just merely liked the name. I do not know how to delete my previous posts, or I would. Anyways, I just want to ask if anyone knows the meaning of the word bipennis. DO NOT think that it's something perverted or gross. When I first discovered the meaning, I was shocked. What about you all?

Ps: Most of you are apparently older than I. I'm just a sophmore in college studying to be a teacher. So, sorry about touching on your "family feelings".

Well, S-T-U, I'll tell you. We've had some bad brushes here and we are somewhat touchy now. If you'd like to participate, I'm sure we'd love to have you. One thing we usually recommend to strangers is that they read some of the older threads and read the newer ones, too, until you get a feel for the place.
If you click on this link, it should take you to a thread where you will find other links to threads that we enjoyed and chose as our favorites. We know it is impossible to read all the threads here, many of us have tried and failed! Well, here's the link:

Edit We have members here from all age groups from teens through the 80's. Most of us might be older than you, but we really don't care much about age here. Enjoy!

Yes. Bipennis is a good word, if you ax me. I do like a bit of Greek etymology. Hey, how 'bout you change your handle and come in again after you've learned how to deign to interact with us humble mortals?

I never made the Anu connection with smarterthanu name. I thought it was a clever play with:

Smarter Than You.

And I figured if smarterthanu thought she was smarterthanI, then so be it. Lots of people are. Big deal.

This was the first experience for several of us, too.

It is!

That's all right, Honey. We understand now where you're coming from, and we're glad to have you. I personally don't think it's necessary for you to delete your posts, but if you want to know how anyway, feel free to send me or 'most anyone a PM.
Your bipennis word is very interesting! I had a heck of a time even finding a def. The pennis part reminds me of pinnate; can one of you experts tell me if there's a connection?

There is, indeed, a connection. While the normal definition of the term refers to a double-bladed ax, it's sort of payback for the use of gladiolus as a flower name. The roots are two (bi) and feather (penna) and it refers to something having two feather-like edges. The lovely ASp probably had the labrys (which its own self may beg some payback) in mind when she alluded to the Greek etymology.
