I had one of those coffee-out-through-the-nose moments today. Rereading P.J. O'Rourke's All The Troubles In The World, I came across his description of Mogadishu in 1993:

"The town looked exactly like a crime scene where the murderer has remained but the corpse has fled the scene."

He's hard to beat for symbolism!
