interesting to see how the word estrogen can be tracked back to oistros, meaning frenzy (as maddening as a gadfly!!).

Interesting, yes, but not in the least bit surprising. [running-away-and-hiding-for-the-next-year-or-so -e]

Women's problems result largely from the fact that they are under the influence of raging hormones once a month for four, five days. Men are under the influence of raging hormones 24/7 so we're used to it.

That is an interesting etymology. In school used the simple but probably not quite accurate mnemonic for progesterone, "it promotes gestation." And for estrogen it was associated with estrous. But the frenzy angle sheds a whole new light on it. I would have thought chocolate could be traced back to some word for frenzy.

Gutter police and other pious souls look away...

Men are under the influence of raging hormones 24/7 so we're used to it.

Reminds me of the joke about the guy who went to his doctor and complained that he had had only one erection his whole life. The doctor seemed concerned, and he asked him how long did the erection last. The man replied, "Well, let's see. I was 12 years old at the time, and I'm 36 now, so that makes 24 years."

Re; Men are under the influence of raging hormones 24/7 so we're used to it.

reminds me of the old joke-- which would you prefer a male boss or a female one?

Female... while her hormones turn her into a bitch 3 or 4 days every month, a male boss is a bastard all the time.

i personally find that classic "PMS" is a magnifier.. if i am in a good mood, or had a good experience, the changing hormone level makes it into a great mood. but if i had a bad day or something has gone wrong, then, that too, gets magnified, normal anxiety, becomes almost panic attack, too.

of course the physical symptoms associated with hormonal cycle do tent to make it more likely i will not be in a good mood..its hard to be up with a head ache
