I am suddenly highly skeptical regarding this whole "spontaneous" fish on bike thing that we have going on here; viz. http://www.fishonabike.com/sightings.htm

That's some mighty fine angling there, tsuwm. Love the site! I'm gonna E-mail the guy and invite him here.

(... and reserve your skepticism. Ater all, fire was spontaneously discovered at different times in different places )

I hope he got some shots of those prawns on bicycles at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympics. Possibly the largest mass sighting to date of sea creatures on bicycles.

What, I wonder, is the collective noun for a group of fish on bicycles? Do we adopt the "school" of fish, "pack" of cyclists, combine them to form a "schoolpack" of cycling fish, or use an entirely different word? Now there's a challenge I'm sure won't go unanswered!

Hi Anna!

Are you talking about spontaneous human combustion?
Fascinating subject.

Damn, I didn't see the prawns Marty! Anybody out there know if any pix are online? Though I suppose they are a bit shellfish.

Is the collective noun for cyclists really a "pack"? That doesn't sound right at all. Far too efficient-sounding and predatory for all the cyclists I know. Something like a "meander" or a "wobble" would be better.

And what's the difference between a "school" and a "shoal"?

I'm sure answers won't be lacking for these questions, either.

OK, I don't talk about spontaneous human combustion and you don't talk about frying fish.

That's fRying fish, not fLying fish, which are wonderful creatures and no problem at all.

Unless they're flying into buckets of boiling fat, of course.

Bravo Anna, I am impressed. You say you will get Fish as a member and there he is a couple of posts later. Wouldn't want you showing up at my door to sell insurance.

Oh, and if I saw many fish go by on bikes I would probably call it a miracle .

Welcome, er, Fishcycler. I cannot beLIEVE we now have a thread as a...a...oh heck, a post-er! Geez, mon, she said crabbily. (Ref. Disney's Little Mermaid.)

Who's hooked who?
There's something fishy about this whole thing, I think.

Group name for fish on bikes: well, I like the word pool, esp. if the fish are carp==carpool. The two in the lead would display their motto on a banner: carpe diem.

Here on the seeboard polluted for donkey's years by the outpourings from Sellafield, this counts as an almost everday occurrence. Still, there used to be even more radioactive sludge in the water; now they've been forced to clean up a bit, hence the new sign advertising

Hi Jackie,

Would a bunch of flying fish be a poolover?
That's a bit hairy.

I haven't seen Disney's Little Mermaid.
Does she ride a bike?
It would have to be side-saddle, I suppose.

P.S. Carpe diem - love it!

Thanks anyway Anna, but when I was down in Florida last weekend I was offered some nice beachfront property in the everglades. Somewhere called Deltona Leech, I’m told.
And in New York, I’m told there is this Golden Gate Bridge to be bought for a song...Bach, I think I’ll just stay home.

In that case, bel, I've got some nice tsunami insurance here... what every Canadian needs. I can PDF you the policy.

Here in SC we have always referred to a group of fish on bicycles as a "sprocket".

You are of course yolking - that's really scratching a round. I thought the science of eggonomics was about a better-fitting egg cup?
