Does anyone know the earliest use of this word? (military-entertainment aimed at the general population, with the cooporation of the military, often considered proproganistic.)

Dear zzrg: I found a dozen sites, all of which seemed to indicate that the term is a relatively new coinage. I could not find any clue as to when or who started it.

Actually it's absolute nonsense that is easy to remember. Although I like the word syzygy, and what is even spookier once I looked up the definition is that one of my favorite movies of all time is 2001 a Space Oddessy which has more visual examples of syzygy than any other movie that I know of. hmm..

Aw, shoot--I thought for sure I'd scored a hit! [mock sad-face emoticon] I like the word syzygy, too, though it gives me one of the very few occasions to look up spelling. Hmm--could there be such a thing as a Field of syzygy?

Hi and welcome zzrg!
In the days I had conenction day-to-day with military I never heard that!
However, since 1992 I haven't been around the troops very often.
I have sent an email to a couple of active duty types.
Soon as I hear I'll let you know .... unless someone beats me to it (wouldn't be the first time!)
Edit - 2 hrs later
Contact made from two officers and one NCO and the concensus is : never heard of "militainment" ... probably some knucklehead's idea to try to make something sound official! That's the gist, anyway.
Hope this hasn't burst any pretty balloons?!
BTW, where did you hear it? Or did you say and I glossed over it?

This link is the oldest reference that I could find on the Net. I cannot promise the link will work. Google picked it up. It appears to be an archived story.
I thought it was a new word but was not sure. It's from the March 4th issue of Time. It might be the first usage since the word appears only in the title of the piece and seems to be the hook for the story. I found it quite disturbing. Military Entertainment Complex is an older and establish term with a different meaning, I think. (From the joint ventures between the studios and the military with a military applications, unthinkable senarios and creative/realistic training materials.) A search of the Internet shows the use of the word to be fairly common at this point. My interest was actually sparked by either a question or reply between Dan Rather and a BBC interviewer. It was not clear from the BBC story.

Knowing my brain, it was dumped in there at some point and I liked the look of it. (I also cannot spell worth a darn for an English major.) It was one of those user names you type in after having your first twenty or so choices and being told that it is in use.
