Dear Max: "In my speech I am very much an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, semi-educated NZer. " I had no idea the "ordinary, run-of-the mill NZer" was so well educated, and spoke so well. I am even more impressed than I was when I was told by a French teacher that all the street cleaners in Paris spoke French.
. At this point forgive me for goofing this morning, and and making a typo that far too many people have flattered me by copying.. I meant to write "idiolect" and goofed and wrote "ideolect." The Greeks had a word for it, but I dare not attempt it at the moment.
Max, let me assure you that the Board members give you higher marks than you give yourself. Bill

Max, stop it, stop it, I can't stand it!! My dear--no, you're not perfect, of course--but oh, you are so...so...
oh, I'm too wrought up to think...intelligent; and
knowledgeable--I wonder if anyone is really aware of the entire depth of your knowledge. And what's so impressive to me, Dear Heart, is that so many of the things you know, you have not had anyone teach you: you simply have the verve, the desire, and the ability to find them out on your own. And are generous enough to share freely with someone like myself, who is ignorant of so many things.
You are in no way "sad", or "annoying" or "clumsy", or any of the other awful things you put, in the way you use language, my dear. Trust me on that.

I vote for "idiolect," taking as my basis the analogous "idiom" and "idiosyncrasy."

Speaking as one of the ideots let me just say (how's that for a dangling participle) that anyone who summarily dismisses such a useful word as proactive simply because it took so long for us to recognize the need for it can't be all bad.

my post was neither an apology for my ideolect, nor an attempt to elicit sympathy. I is wot I is, and that's it.
I didn't think you were, and wot you are is wonderful. Grr.

this is a good idea for a new thread: My Idiolect
If this was a political bulletin board [stern warning look],
we could title it My Idiot-Elect.
