Howlers

Yes, I know they’re old hat but here’s some that were published in The Melbourne Age this morning which were new to me – enjoy!

- The principal singer of 19th century opera was called pre-Madonna.

- Rock Monanoff was a famous post-romantic composer of piano concerti.

and, for an encore,

- I know what a sextet is, but I’d rather not say.

Funny! These were new to me, paulb.
Here's an oldie: who was the lady who fell off
the cliff? Eileen Dover.

Oh dear! I'm going to have to rein myself in here - I have HUNDREDS of howlers gleaned over the years from student efforts. I'll be very selective.

When forests are cut down the atmosphere becomes intoxicated.
Scientists are the missing link between the everyday public and the world.
Pollution is a viscous cycle.

And one for those down under:
Mortein bugs are a delicacy in Queensland.

Don't rein yourself in too far! A very good list - do you have some more?

OK - you've twisted my arm!

Whopping cough was a killer disease in the nineteenth century.
Society puts its utmost responsibility in doctors, especially when they are near their death beds.
Thus scientists increase the age of people dying.
Without scientists, life as we know it might not be the same.
The nuclear waist was not an attractive sight.
Without life, existence is no longer possible.

And one last one for those 'down under'.
We learn of Samson and his donkey fighting to save lives in the midst of war.

Two that I can remember:

'on cooling, the sulpur became viscose'

(Of the Vikings)
'the men would fish and hunt and the wives would salt them for the long winter'
(guess that would explain why Viking culture never spread, even if they did discover America before the Anglo-Saxons did...)
