What is the word meaning

an organism that grows only to meet the size of its container. The organism with this property does not outgrow its pot or pond, being genetically coded not to reach a specific size, but an appropriate, adaptive size without detriment to the organism.

I believe I heard it being applied to koi from a biological point of view. Alternately, it might have been in a lecture about micro-ecosystems. I'm' not sure if it was an adjective or noun.

No librarian, university or otherwise, has been able to help me.

Does anyone know the word or where to point me? Perhaps there is
a resource you know that might help me locate it? Like a rhyming dictionary, but for meanings, maybe?

Thanks!
I've been on AWAD's daily emails since '94 or '95, but only just found out about the board last week.

Any ideas where I might look for the word I need?

If you Google "goldfish grow as big as their environment" (there's your koi !) you get a bunch of references, including this in a box:

There is an element of truth to this, but it is not as innocent as it sounds and is related more to water quality than tank size. When properly cared for, goldfish will not stop growing. Most fishes are in fact what are known as indeterminate growers. This means that, unlike humans, they grow until they die.

So, if you accept their answer, the word you're seeking is "indeterminate."

I'd have a tendency to agree: "Ideterminate" fits well.

good reference, Doc.

Thank you for the idea.

I've had quite a bit of googling for it (and surfing biology/botany/zoology textbooks) and came across indeterminate. I know determinate vs. indeterminate from farming; there it meant whether we had to plant once, because the plant would keep bearing, or rip everything out after bearing, and plant two or three times.

No, this was a much more specialized word, specific to the field, I think. That's why I've seen it once and, not being in botany or zoology, never again.

"Attenuated" is probably a better synonym for the word I'm hunting.
