Mahatma Gandhi walked barefoot everywhere, so his feet became quite thick and hard. He was also quite a spiritual man. Even when he was not on a hunger strike, Gandhi rarely ate much, making him quite thin and frail. Furthermore, because of this diet, he wound up with very bad breath. Therefore, he came to be known as a

Thanks, pieman! He was also plagued by mis-spellings -- his name was Gandhi.

How appropriate for the main wordsmithy to include this quotation in today's mailing.....
"Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes". Mahatma Gandhi

M K Gandhi (assassinated by a Hindu nationalist, and often called 'the father of the nation') is, for me, the exemplar of the idea that you can be a great family person, or you can be a hero, but you cannot be both.

From what I remember, both his sons were alcoholics, a condition attributed partly to the lack of parental care and partly to the pressure of achievement placed upon them. Which does not mean to say I think either: that Gandhi was an evil person, or that what he did was not worthwhile; but that, in order to achieve any sort of greatness for humanity, one must most likely have to pay a bitter personal cost.

In any case, my favourite line from Richard Attenborough's film was from Gandhi himself:

"An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind."

So much for retribution.

Sunshine Warrior,

Yes, Gandhi was a very wise and very great man. I believe
that if his religion had saints, he'd be one for sure.

To my good friend pieman. I am feeling very chastened by the discussion going on in the "rules of engagement" thread (some form of 'dating guide'?). Although an apposite quote provided by our chief the following day turned my normally pale complexion a burning red, I must apologise to you publicly for criticising a mis-spelling in your post.
I remain on bended knee, paulb.
