Suppose a teacher gives his students a list of words for homework, which of the following sentences should he use?

Learn the spelling and meaning of the words.

Learn the spellings and meanings of the words.

Which is the correct sentence? I think it should be the second sentence.

Thanks.

I'd go with the first sentence. Logically you would think that because you are talking about multiple words each with its own spelling and meaning, but the first sentence is more colloquial.

Do you mean the second sentence? Thanks.

Nope. The first sentence, with spelling and meaning in the singular.
