If I'm not mistaken, she was the landlady who let Clayton, Jackson, and Durante stay in her boardinghouse for months on end when they were having trouble making payments, and she didn't hound them (too much) for the rent. Of the three, Durante was the one who eventually made it big, and he kept a slot on his show for Eddie(?) Jackson (Clayton was gone by then) so he could get him a paycheck once a year, anyway...and he never forgot to acknowledge Mrs. Calabash, even after she became the late Mrs. Calabash.

Unless of course it's all an Urban Myth, because it makes a good story.

Now where were we? UNTROD, was it?

Urban myth or no, that is a really fascinating story.
I am really glad you posted it. I'll bet there is some
real truth in it, it is too novel to be just myth. Thanks
a lot.

Well, a quick Googling of the question reveals a couple of common explanations, none of them authenticated...and all of them different from what I proposed. So much for the indulgent landlady. Maybe we can start a rumor?

Interesting this game...you get entertainment and education. I didn't know this word Gerund, but now I've read up about it I see its a schizophrenic word.
