-------------------

---------------The hog is loose, bless spring coming.

The official definition is taken with making a spelling mistake from Collins Anniversary edition 2007. (also check Dictionary/Thesaurus, onelook)

Father Steve:
n., archaic Scots term for whole oats cooked with beer and butter. 2) Jackie, Faldage

Jackie :
n. a patch of quicksand (or similar) between the hillocks of a swamp. 1) LukeJavan8

Owlbow:
n.a geological land feature formed by an oceanic eddy;
when the sea level recedes the depression left behind is termed a grough. 1) Father Steve

Bexter :
n.a drink made with water or "small beer" and rum, which was introduced into the Royal Navy in 1740. Pronounced grog

olly:
v.to speak a muffled word into ones hand as if to cough. 1)Avy

Faldage :
n.a small burrowing North American marsupial, related to the opossum. 1) Candy

LukeJavan8 : grough
n.a road surface marked with potholes. 1) tsuwm

wofahulicodoc:
n.(pronounced "grok") - to understand thoroughy and completely, to the deepest essence. A Martian word, coined by Robert Heinlein in Stranger in a Strange Land; it became a cult word in the Science Fiction world in the 1960s.

Avy :
v. to plant (something) again or in a new place.1)Bufflo Shrdlu

Collins English Dictionary '175 years of dictionar publishing' edition 2007 :
n. mounteneering mountaineering a natural channel or fissure in a peat moor; a peat hag. 2)Bexter, Owlbow ( I'm glad Owlbow and Bexter did not suffer from the misspelling)

Candy: A method of stone construction which produces a vaulted ceiling.1) wofaholicodoc

So here you all are, Father Steve, Owlbow and LukeJavan8 have two points even if the points don't count. And many have 1.

Thank you all participants, it was work but also a pleasure.
The real definition is 2 points in the negative, but the Hog is happy to jump to muddy waters.

Yes, I was wrong, its mountaineering!! Hurray! Ahoy! Busy times or soft in the head from now on? Thank God this did not happen at the French Court in the 18th Century. It would have meant banishment for life to the New World.
*The deepest essence however is whether things are fun and whether you feel yourself a stranger in a strange land or not. (thanks wofaholicodoc)

Yeah, this was fun--thank you! smile

Edit: by the way, is it pronounced grow (with the ow as in ouch), grow (with the ow as in oh), gruff...or something else altogether?

I think that not giving a pronunciation left things wide open for our definers.

as to..
SIR CEART PRIESE GROUGH, BARONET, OF THOVE
Ough in Grough may be pronounced in any one of the eight ways above enumerated; so our baronet's patronymic may be Grau, Gro, Groo, or Grou; Grof, Gruf, Groh, or Grup.

Huh. The Chambers that Jo gave me--the 2000 edition--doesn't even have it: it goes from grouch to ground.
